Les rendez-vous qui suivent varient dépendant des couples et des problèmes auxquels ils font face. Le thérapeute ne sera pas un juge lors des échanges, mais un accompagnateur qui saura mettre le doigt sur les souffrances présentes et passées.
Lors d’une thérapie de couple, ce dernier devra aussi faire des exercices, comme le jeu de rôle, des taches à faire sur soi, ou encore répéter une dispute en prenant la place de son partenaire. Afin de donner le temps au couple de comprendre la séance, cette dernière est souvent espacée de plusieurs semaines. Il faut très souvent de nombreuses séances afin de voir des résultats concrets, et pour certains couples, 2 à 3 séances suffisent. Pour que la thérapie soit aussi efficace, il faudra bannir les mensonges et mettre en avant la sincérité.
